The Three Skillsets

When you write every day of the week, it’s a blessing and a curse.

It’s a blessing because the more you do anything, the better you get. Let me clarify that statement, though.

Practice alone doesn’t guarantee you’ll get better. The old saying, “Practice makes perfect” is wrong! If you continue to practice the wrong stuff, you will not improve.

Practice
A better statement is “Perfect practice makes perfect.” That means if you practice the right stuff, you will improve.

Our goal at Alexander Art is simple. We want you to become the best artist you can be. There are three skillsets you need to master to set yourself apart from other artists. Regardless of the type of painter you want to become, all three are essential to your success.

Mindset
The first skill set to master is mindset. We address this vital topic in almost all of our teaching videos because we know how essential mindset is to your success.

We’ve written before that artists are the worst critics of their own work. There are profound psychological reasons for this which we will address in future emails. We also plan to give you tools you can use to approach the canvas with confidence and the right attitude.

Skillset
Mastering the principles that make great art is the second skill you need on your way to mastery. Our videos show some fantastic techniques by some of the most skilled artists on the planet. Due to time constraints under which they worked, most of those skills remain for you to discover. We understand how daunting a task that can be. For that reason, we’ve gone through a lot of effort to extract the essential elements you need from our videos. This process allows you to focus your practice and speed up your progress.

Toolset
The final mastery is learning how to use the artist toolset. Paint, medium, and brushes are more than tools. Each must work together in a way that helps the artist communicate with their viewer.

Our world would not exist without light. Your paintings are a reflection of the world. An artist must understand how to manipulate light with pigment.
