The fountain and the water-jar!

Bill started painting when he was 14. That was his job as an apprentice to the carriage-maker in the village in which he grew up. He painted the carriages with decorative doodles and scenes of country life. Bill’s interest in art began much earlier, though, when he met an itinerant painter. He introduced Bill to the wonders of painting. Bill was fortunate, as an apprentice, to be able to build on that introduction. It would serve him well for the rest of his life.

"He who can go to the fountain does not go to the water-jar."- Leonardo da Vinci

By the time Bill’s television show premiered on PBS, he had painted for fifty years — half a century!

Bill didn’t stop there, though. His television show ran for another twenty years. Although Bill retired from the show, he continued painting.

Bill never stopped trying to improve himself and make his craft better.

He was a modern Renaissance man. He invented a new type of oil paint. He developed Magic White™. He created a new kind of palette knife that is used by thousands of painters today.

Bill was a teacher, too. Bill taught for twenty years before he became a television celebrity. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to estimate that Bill taught thousands how to paint. With his Emmy award-winning television show, he would teach millions more.

We’ve packed all this experience into our art courses. It’s Bill at his absolute best … as a painter … and … as a teacher.
