It’s interesting how one idea will trigger a bunch of connections based on what you’re doing at the moment.

Do you remember watching television on Saturdays when you were a kid?

One of these quotes is attributed to Socrates. The other is to a Chinese philosopher who wrote one of the foundational texts of Taoism.

In the footnote, the translator states that many readers misunderstood Leonardo’s suggestion. Leonardo did not mean that the student should be a master of perspective. He intended that the student should understand the fundamental problems that beginners make. It would be up to the apprentice’s master to instruct him in the broader laws of perspective.

I was listening to my audiobook this morning on Creativity. The author interviewed many creative people from many disciplines. He said that creativity could not occur without first mastering the domain in which the creative person works. In other words, unless you know your subject, you cannot add to it.
