Finding a master

There is so much to know and learn – and time is running out! What is the old saying? The lack of information is not a problem anymore. Maybe five hundred years ago finding information was difficult. Then Gutenberg invented the printing press and information became accessible and plentiful. The Internet is unleashing an explosion of data.

"Art is long and time is short."

For example, To find out how fast information is doubling. A simple google search and .54 seconds later there are 24,700,000 sources answering that question. Lack of information is no longer a problem.

Sorting good from the bad

The problem is sorting out the “good” information from the “bad.”

I discussed a problem related to the vast information pool with which we now contend. We concluded that most people don’t succeed as an artist because they jump around so much. He told me of a recent experience with some of his students. After finishing his class, they took some lessons from another painter in town. They ended up losing much of what he taught them.

Human beings, by our very nature, are curious. There’s also that feeling we’re missing out on something. So it’s natural we try to take advantage of new learning opportunities. The problem is the risk of getting one mile wide and only one inch deep. We expose ourselves to a lot of knowledge but master very little of it.

A three-step plan

  •  Find a master. This search is no easy task as we wrote about in this article.
  • Stick with that master until you have no more to learn. Most likely, if she is a true master, that day will never come.
  • Practice, practice, practice. Practice makes the master, but practice the right stuff. A master will assure you do!
