I started painting with traditional oils back in 1984. That approach usually began by sketching the subject onto the canvas with charcoal or thinned paint. The oil paint was mixed with linseed oil, mineral spirits, or other solvents to adjust the thickness or drying time.
Then came the waiting—often a full day between each layer. You’d repeat that process step by step until the painting was finally complete.
Everything changed when I saw Bill Alexander on my local PBS station. His bold, direct method grabbed me right away. I started painting along with him, and before long, I was painting on my own. But Bill still inspires me—his spirit, his confidence, and the joy he brought to the canvas.
Nearly 25 years later, I’m still using these techniques in my work.
Sometimes, the hardest part is just getting started—that blank canvas staring back at you from the easel. But once you pick up the brush, the fear starts to fade. And that’s where the magic begins.

Many people wonder if they have what it takes to become an artist. At Alexander Art, we believe anyone with a desire to learn to paint, can become the artist they’ve always wanted to be.
